The 2008-2009 school year is off and running. Hard to believe we’ve already been in school two weeks, but time sure does fly. Sure, we’ve had some bumps to the start of the year and we’re running behind where I’d like to be with several of the administrative stuff that has to be done, but all in all we’re moving full steam ahead. The students all have their library cards and are checking out lots of great books, audiobooks, and videos. While I’m sometimes dread the repetition that comes with library orientations, the look of excitement and joy on the kids faces when they start looking for this first books of the year is always amazing! We’ll spend a lot of time over the course of the new few weeks reinforcing procedures, but students are always quick to catch on. I always love the start of school because it is a fresh start. It is a chance to try those things I didn’t have time to try last year. It is a time to think about new ways to do some of the projects we’ve always done the same old way. A new school year is always like a fresh start. Few professions give us that change to focus on looking forward. Right before school started I found this fabulous book Happy School Year by Susan Milford and illustrated by Mary Newell DePalma. As the book ends, the students, staff, and parents all sing:
“Happy school year for us
Happy school year for us
May this be the best ever,
Happy school year for us!”
I’m sure that 2008-2009 will be the best school year ever! I can’t wait to see what fun and excitement are ahead of us!
