Election Day

November 4th, 2008 by Carl Harvey

Its election day! I’m up a little earlier than normal so I can try to get through the line quickly and off to school. We still have a few more things to do to prep for our school’s mock election. The kids are hyped about this election just like the rest of the country. Yesterday founding them chanting and supporting the candidate of their choice. Most youngsters I imagine will be support the same candidate as their parents. While Indiana tends to be a red state, this year it is a toss up making it even more exciting.

We’re taking our mock election to a new level this year by using Survey Monkey as our voting software. We’re asking students to click which room they are from and then vote for President and Governor. Will use the software to tell us which candidates won the classroom and then we’re using a school map and coloring it in red and blue as appropriate for each classroom. This is our way of comparing our mock election to the electorial college. We’ll be using our video production studio to go on live three times to give the school updates from the map. Our green screen will allow us to have some fun by putting the map right behind our anchors.

It should be a long, but exciting day as hopefully the buzz and energy from this election will last a long time. It has been a long time since participation has been this high in an election and hopefully if we can show our kids how important voting is, we can keep it going for many years to come!

So whether you are a youngster who has the chance to vote in a mock election or an adult ready to cast a ballot in the election, please do take time today to vote! Your voice does matter!
